Excellent Biblical Teaching
About 20 years ago I commented to my mother ( a lifelong public school teacher) that if I had to choose my career over again, I would like to become a teacher. I have since realized that we are all teachers…in whatever walk of life we follow. As I look back at my various jobs, I see that I have been engaged in training, instructing or ‘teaching’ fellow employees on every stop. And now being a pastor, one of my main priorities is preaching and teaching the Word of God, and also teaching (modelling) the Christian life in American society.
Teaching is so much more than throwing information out and hoping that everyone catches it. Teaching is an art, a skill, a constantly changing challenge…one that I am still learning! There are many helps out there to assist us in becoming proficient teachers, including books, courses and mentors. Another great resource is the internet. We even have a member of our church who is in the process of attaining his Doctorate to prepare him for a lifetime of excellence in teaching. He has a blogsite www.awilum.com which often presents groundbreaking ideas about teaching in a new generation, using new techniques and tools. Check it out, you might be surprised, or taught something new!
Here at Hyde Park Baptist Church, the one thing that never changes about our teaching is the subject matter! We are stuck on the same story from the same book that has been taught for the past 2000 years. The subject is God’s grace to mankind in Jesus Christ, as given through the only ‘living’ book, the Word of God…the Bible.
If you’re ever in Cincinnati, stop by and worship with us to see how we’re doing in teaching and living the Word made flesh. As one of my more famous teachers said, “I determined to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified”!
