Reflections on the Shepherd’s Conference
For my first post I have finally found the time to share some of my experiences at the Shepherds Conference at Grace Community Church, hosted by John MacArthur, Jr. First of all, it was an absolutely great time of refreshing and challenge. I have heard all of the speakers before and enjoy their sharing from God’s Word in relevant and God-honoring fashion.
I met for the first time one of the men who did not speak at this particular conference, C.J. Mahaney. I have never met or heard him before, but the host family related to me how much their son enjoyed him speaking at the masters college. I received a book of his on humility, and purchased another of his on ‘Living the Cross Centered Life’. WOW!!! He really gets to the heart of the matter about holding to the gospel daily, and living every aspect of our life and ministry in the light of the Cross of Christ. I think I have just acquired another favorite author.
Speaking of finding new books, I have been introduced to D.A. Carson’s writings, primarily his book “The Gagging of God”. Awesome! I encourage anyone who wants to be informed on current evangelical problems and God’s solutions to check it out.
Back to the conference, there was a special joy in hearing 3000 pastors (men of course) singing with all their heart and appreciation to God for His mercy and grace. Incredible…worth the price of admission alone!
I encourage you to check out the ministries and features of John MacArthur’s program ‘Grace to You’ and also the shepherds conference on the web. It was great to see their heart for equipping and encouraging us ‘little guys’ with our ‘little ministries’.
It was also a highlight to get to know some of the other pastors that attended. I was especially touched by the pastor of the small church on the Yukon river in Alaska. He ministers to a small town of fishermen and hunters, people who live off the land. It is rough country and a tough ministry. But God is mighty and will accomplish His desires among these townspeople and in this pastor’s life.
The week in L.A. reminded me of how great it is to be from and in Cincinnati! I am also reminded of God’s incredible grace for saving me and allowing me to serve Him by bringing His word to His people, and working for Him by sharing the gospel with those who are still not seeing and believing.
Thanks for coming, and visit often.
p.s. Next weeks sermon is on ‘Biblical Slavery-a picture of our relationship to the Savior’. Join us if you’re in town!
